Betancourt was kidnapped in February 2002 during a presidential campaign. She and three Americans, held since 2003, were rescued along with 11 Colombian soldiers in a dramatic military operation, after soldiers infiltrated the rebel group. On July 2, 2008, Minister of Defense Juan Manuel Santos called a press conference to announce the rescue of 15 hostages. Among them the ones of most political value were Íngrid Betancourt and American Northrop Grumman contractors Marc Gonsalves, Keith Stansell and Thomas Howes.
